TECHNOLOGY
Berd spokes are made from an advanced polymer called ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) that has 15 times the strength-to-weight ratio of steel and floats on water. Berd spokes have an improved fatigue life compared to steel and are impervious to the elements.

Berd Spokes

My son has been racing these spokes since February. So far at any National BMX race he is the only kid running these spokes and he is always podiums in National Races if not wins. The only downside to these spokes: there are alot of bike mechanics out there that will balance rims, however, they will not balance the berd spokes because they do not know alot about them. Which leaves us with a unbalanced rim.

Getting Berd spokes on all my bikes

I tried out Berd spokes on my fat bike and noticed the weight and feel right away. The wheels spin up to speed much faster than before and my hands weren't numb after riding. At first I was nervous about trying something new but they are extremely strong. I am 230 lbs and have put these spokes/wheels to the test and after over a year they're as true as the day I got them. I will be getting them on all my bikes!

Too Delicate

Building with berds is a breeze, and so is riding. Built with ultegra hubs and DT rims, 32 spokes. Light and smooth. Experienced road rider and tech. However, a few rides in I suffered a derailment, immediately slicing 2 spokes, and damaging 3 others (later to break unexpectedly). Most expensive derailment ever. Talking to the rep lead me to buy a spoke protector and replacing damage at my own expense (~$50 down). So I kept riding. Then another broke on my rear, then another... at that point I figured they just can't take the torque so I went back to steel on the rear ($256 down). At this point I figured the MTB advertising was misleading, implying durability, and requested a partial refund (50% the cost of my rear) as I thought reasonable. As I didn't buy the "berd builders kit" (the most expensive hook, blade holder and file I've seen), then my building was at fault!? I actually tested the smoothness of the hub holes by rubbing thread around the hub holes - berd knows this. Finally, yesterday a spoke on my front snapped, the last straw. So I'm writing the review I hoped I never would. A nice idea, just not tough enough for the real world.

George, while I am very sorry for your experience, you did not follow the installation procedure that is required for Berd spokes (berdspokes.com/support). The sharp corners that are created on all J-bend hubs during the machine process must be removed using the specialty corner rounding end mill that is part of our builder's tool kit. If this process is not performed, the spokes WILL become damaged at the hub holes. Testing the smoothness by rubbing a thread around the hub holes is NOT a way to determine if hubs need to be prepared using the Berd procedure. So, while I am very sorry for your experience, it is not surprising that you experienced spoke failure given that the installation procedure was not followed. We would love to rebuild your wheels here at the Berd factory at no charge to you so that you can re-evaluate your opinion on the durability of Berd spokes.
