All Berd wheels are now available with the new Onyx Racing Products Hook Flange Vesper hubs! Designed specifically for Berd spokes, these hubs feature hooks on the hub shell for securing Berd spokes without the use of the rod used in traditional j-bend and straight pull hubs. The result is a durable connection with a clean look and available in all of the custom colors that Onyx has to offer!

Onyx Racing Products hubs feature a completely silent sprag clutch freehub mechanism to silence your coasting and provide instant power transfer for faster acceleration and more control.

Available in all road and mountain bike geometries including Non-Boost (including SingleSpeed), Boost and SuperBoost in any color to match your ride. Onyx Vesper Hook Flange hubs are available as an option on all Berd wheels for only $100 extra.

After ordering, you will receive an email to select your hub color, hub width (i.e, 15x110 mm front, 12x148 mm rear, etc.), and freehub body type (SRAM XDR, Shimano Hyperglide, Shimano Microspline, etc.). Each set of wheels is custom produced with your hub selections, so please allow 6-8 weeks for delivery.

Onyx Hook Flange Hubs

buyer beware

these wheels will not make you faster. While you will accelerate faster, you lose momentum on sprints, if you have the cardio to push it, then yes weight trumps everything, but for average joes, its a trade off.

you won't realize the inertia tax you are paying until you try these and pedaling gets a telepathic response. lifting the front is too easy.

These wheels will always go over the tech you point it at. Alloy tends to take it's own line. if you plan to charge through tech with momentum these aren't great for that, you will need to pedal. The pathfinding though is great, the wheels are easy to turn.

your center of balance can be out of whack, you could be required to be more active with your posture, and mindful of your traction.

The wheels numb out gravel to light tech, but the rims can be felt on harder square hits. it's a weird feeling when you can drop of a curb and feel nothing, no clunk.

It's not mentioned but you will need an exterior notched centerlock ring, and cannot run torque caps on these vesper hubs (they don't clear the centerlock lockring).

140mm ti hardtail, pike, WTB ranger 2.4 20-24 psi

FYI, i fixed the center of balance problems by converting my pike to coil and now have a super plush hardtail.

Sensory Shred

Completely dampen the trail chatter and smooth out your flow with wheels so kush you'd think you were listening to some easy jazz. The Onyx hubs allow you to fully immerse yourself in your ride. Hearing the way your tires interact with the trail gives you just one more sense that you can devote to the control of your shred. The package deal makes for one of the most unique MTB rides you can experience.

Thank you for the review James! Onyx hubs and Berd spokes make for a great combo!

Onyx Hook Flange Hubs with Berd Spokes are Amazing

I have two sets of Berd wheels. The first set I bought last year prior to the Breck Epic. They are the Hawk 27s (i9 hydras, Berd spokes, and We Are One rims). I've enjoyed those so much, I wanted a second set, but wanted aluminum rims. So I had Berd build me up a set with DT Swiss rims, Onyx hubs, and Berd Spokes. I've always loved the sound of i9s, but the quietness of the Onyx hubs are next level. Also, the engagement and performance of those hubs with the Berd spokes are also next level. The two bikes I ride the most are not outfitted with Berd spokes. If I build another set, I will go with the Onyx hubs as hook flange just makes sense. Couldn't be happier with both sets.

Thanks for the review Doug!

Great wheels!

My name is Bennett White. I have been riding my entire life with extensive racing on and off over the past 50+ years. I am a complete equipment snob, not from a perspective of notoriety but from a utilitarian perspective of performance and trust worthiness. I ride gravel, mtb and road. I currently run, I9, Campy, DT Swiss, Princeton and Berd wheels.

Without question, Berd wheels have mastered the combination between compliance and stiffness better than anything else I have ever ridden. These hoops are the best engineered, best thought out set of wheels available on the market. If you are considering a set of Berd wheels I would seriously encourage you to do so. Your riding experience will never be the same and your understanding of what great wheels are capable of will be greatly enhanced.
